South African Climate
Durban, the 3rd largest city in South Africa is situated on South Africa's East Coast and is famed for its mild, sunny winter climate and year-round "fun-in-the-water" weather. Durban is blessed with an abundance of vegetation and a subtropical climate with sunshine for at least 320 days a year.
Temperatures range from the mid 50's during the winter months of June, July and August to highs of low 80's in the summer months of January February and March. See table below. |

The terrain varies from the sandy beaches, warm Indian Ocean waters and forests of the coastal region, to the typical African savannah of the midlands and the soaring mountains and peaks of the Drakensberg (Dragon Mountains). The mountains contain numerous crystal clear streams and alpine lakes, home to rainbow and brown trout.
It is precisely this wonderful climate that
makes Durban one of the country's most popular holiday destinations. |
The subtropical coastline of KwaZulu-Natal has some of South Africa's best-protected indigenous coastal forests, for example, at Dukuduku and Kosi Bay. It is also along this coast that the magnificent St Lucia Estuary and Kosi Bay lakes are located. |
